Unemployment Benefits Notice

Generally, states have required employers to inform employees of their rights to unemployment benefits.  However, they have allowed employers to fulfill this obligation by simply displaying a poster conspicuously in the workplace. In recent years, a growing number of states have expanded the employer’s notice obligations as it relates to the unemployment benefits notice.  Currently, there are 27 states that require employers to also give each employee a notice of these rights at the termination of their employment.  In this month’s edition, AlphaStaff has provided an overview of the states that have enacted this additional notice requirement and their resource links.  It is important to review your current offboarding process to ensure the appropriate unemployment benefits notice is timely distributed to every terminated employee.
